I fell for a "free pc" scan to speed up my PC. When I finished my scan, I tried to 'fix all' of the problems it found. Then I had to 'register' to run the fixes. Fair enough, I guess. Only then did I learn that it would be $40 to register. I gave them credit card information. Then I was told to call an 877 number to complete the process. After a long time on the phone with the technician 'in' my computer, he said I had to go get it 'checked out and tuned up'. I now have a software product, SpeedMaxPc, that doesn't run. When I get my credit card bill, you can be sure that I'll not pay their charges!
