I just got a call from 202-241-7159 on my cell phone. It was a voice-recorded call with a deadpan-style woman's voice. She gave her "name," but I don't remember it; probably false anyway. She insisted that this was a call to be taken seriously from the IRS for some infraction that was "mumbled quickly," so I didn't understand her on that point. She said that I should retain an attorney and call her back at a specific number (that I did not write down, was unprepared). I decided that the IRS does not call people directly -- they don't even have my cell number. I've been audited in the past and was given a written, advance notice. After one last comment from her urging me to call, I hung up. With the Lois Lerner fiasco, I'm small-time to the IRS. I then went to switchboard.com and did a reverse-phone-lookup, to find that this was -- as suspected -- a scam with a Washington DC area code & address.
