I am retired on VA disability pay, and I went to a Bankruptcy Lawyer to see if I could file. He told me that my VA pay is "untouchable in a Bankruptcy," and if I wanted to file, I should stop paying my bills and close my Bank Account.
I closed my Account, and the Bank Manager took my Debit Card when I wrote a Check for the Balance of my Checking and Savings Accounts on July 31, 2014 at 2 pm CST. My VA pay went to the Bank at Midnight, as it was supposed to, but instead of forwarding my deposit back to the VA, they re-opened my account and deposited the entire amount.
Then, when my Mortgage company requested their $500.00 payment by direct withdrawal at 8 am, they paid it, plus my Car payment of $208.44, and a Magazine subscription of $39.99 on the 6th. I got my regular bank statement on the 11th of Aug. and only then did I find out that my Check wasn't returned to the VA.
How closed does an Account have to be before it's closed??? When I confronted the Bank Manager, he told me that my Account had been in "a closed status and hadn't really been closed." I called the Phone # for a balance check, and the recording told me I had a Zero balance on my Debit Card; however, I had to write another Check to withdraw the remaining Money from my VA pay to re-close my Account. WTF does it take to get a Bank to act on MY BEHALF and in MY BEST INTERESTS?
That was my Service-connected Disability Pay through the VA, which is Non-Taxed. My Retirement, my Disabilities, and my Sole-owned Account--not BANK OF AMERICA's.
How do I get back at the Bank? Or, do I have to go to the Manager, again.
At least, while I was overseas in the Service and got screwed, I got kissed while I was getting it--and a "thank you" after it!!
