When I opened something a friend sent on FB, a notice came up that my computer was slow and a "clean-up" software was offered. It had all the things that made it look legitimate, so I went to "more information." I requested the "scan," which found 602 problems in my computer under various sub-headings. Since I only have "free" protection which isn't working well, I decided it was time to buy a program with full protection. This one with SpeedMaxPC was $29.97, and after installing it, I was give the number (888) 290-7758 to activate the program.

I spoke with a very nice man who said his name is "Joseph/Joe" and allowed him to access my computer to complete the registration. He then showed me several screens referring to the problems I'm having with my computer and said I should take it to Home Depot or Staples where a "level 3 technician" could "fix" it, explaining that the software I had just purchased wouldn't do all I needed done.

I got my son on the line with us to see if it was something he could do himself, and my son was immediately suspicious. He had no idea what we were looking at or where Joe got the screens.

After we hung up, I looked up the company in the address on the email confirmation I had received (MAXTUNEUP LLC). I found that the address of 44 Hughes Blvd., Hampden, ME 04444 belongs to "Maxi Tune Up LLC" which is an automotive service.

I immediately uninstalled the program and called my credit card company to void or block the transaction. Now, however, I have no way of knowing what information he was able to access when he went into my computer or what he might be able to do with it. What a shame there are so many dishonest people out there who prey on the rest of us and steal our enjoyment and peace of mind.
