I received an urgent call notifying me that my PC could be corrupted and the caller needed to get into it to show me. After opening the run box on my PC I was told to run the program www.ammyy.com, which allowed the caller to control my PC. He then showed me what he said was a copious amount of information he said had been put in by hackers to corrupt my PC and assured me if I could fix it with software he would install for $349. I foolishly agreed and gave him my credit card number; when the charge was declined by my back he had me call and override it. Later in the day he told me that money would be returned (it never was) as the software was too old for my PC, but that I had to wire another $350 to a Thomas Thom in India. Meanwhile he set up a fund transfer of $349 that he said was from him to me but actually was me to him, which I only learned that evening when my bank called the question the charge (I cancelled that one). He called back the next day and promised to have an $1,100 check put in my mailbox by that night if I would send him another $390. I refused over and over, but after an hour agreed to wire him another $280. Of course, the promised check never came. I subsequently took my PC to a computer store where I was told it had been locked and unknown passwords installed. Five days later I still don't have it back and have been told the bill will be at least another $220. The guy claimed he lives in California but has a strong Indian accent and passes himself off as "your computer guy."
