A guy with a slight foreign accent calls and says he is Alex Watson from Alameda County Sheriff's Dept. He claims that there is a case against my wife in Federal Court because she did not pay some tax in 2011. He says she needs to turn herself in at the nearest police station. Alternatively, she can resolve the matter by paying $2761 using a cash transfer in the next 45 mins. He knew our address and was extremely convincing at first.
When asked to provide some other form of identification or notification - e.g. an online link to a federal govt site regarding the case - he claims that it can only be done AFTER the payment is made. Things really start to smell when he asks for email address and cell phone and says we have to stay on the line until the payment is made. Meanwhile, we start looking him up online and the first thing that pops up is numerous other complaints on ScamBook. So we told him that we would be reporting him and hopefully there would be an arrest warrant against him soon!
