On 9/14/11 I purchased a set of tires from Les Schwab, located at the 1600 North exit just off the I-15 Freeway in Lindon, Utah. I’ve bought a lot of tires there over the years. Usually I wait for the truck. This time I dropped it off. After returning to the office they called me and told me that after 120,000 miles I ought to replace the shocks and that 3 of my tie-rods needed to be replaced. They wanted $1,300 for this extra work and strongly recommended doing at least the 3 tie-rods for $675.

Knowing what worn tie-rods felt like I smelled a rat and declined the extra work. The truck was due for an oil change. I took it to Powell’s Automotive in Lehi for this service and asked that while I was there if they could check the tie-rods. They did so and all were as good as new.

What a rip-off. I thought it brazen that they would attempt to pull this on a guy obviously involved in the construction business. I can only imagine what they are doing on a daily basis to woman and the elderly.

It makes me wonder if they would at least run an honest scam and actually replace the tie-rods or if they would simply say on the invoice that the tie-rods had been replaced when in fact they had done nothing.

This exact same scam was pulled on me by Big O Tire on State Street in Orem, Utah about 15 years ago. Needless to say I haven’t been back to Big O in Orem and I won’t be back to Les Schwab.

They didn't get me this time.

  • As a mechanic a lot of places DO NOT check tie rods correctly and they go unfixed when they should have been replaced. I would second guess who you took them to in Lehi and take it back to Les Schwab and have them show you how they did it. I'm guessing there is play in these joints and they were trying to save you from wearing your tires faster than normal, not to mention the safety issues.

Did you have them show you how they check the tie rods? Go back and have them show you and I'll bet you'll see they were being honest. And if they were going to scam you, why not go for all 4 tie rods instead of just 3? And they were "as good as new" after 120,000 miles? Highly doubtful.

Get off here and go have Les Schwab show you why they recommended replacing them so you can stop slandering them. From one professional to another, Les Schwab is a great company with many honest employees.
