US Bank will lie to you and take your money while exhibiting a level of incompetence that will astound and amaze you. I decided to try US Bank and opened a checking and savings account without first reading their online reviews. (Every single bank review website I’ve found has extremely negative reviews about US Bank, it was stupid of me to not read online reviews first). I had a check go through which brought my checking into a negative state which they charged me $36 for. The reason this was upsetting is that for 7 years I’ve banked with Capital One 360 (ING Direct) and they have NEVER charged me any overdraft fees, no returned check fees, NOTHING. They actually treat you like they care and want you as a customer as opposed to acting like used car salesmen whose primary goal in life is to screw you as many ways as they can. I called in, told the lady I want everything to be rejected that would cause my account to go negative to avoid any more $36 fees. She confirmed that everything was setup correctly. Two weeks later they charge me $36 again. I called in, they said “oh, this fee was a returned check fee and not an overdraft fee”. When I went over this with the woman prior to this, she said it was setup where I wouldn’t get screwed with these fees. I said I wanted to close my account and pay off the negative balance. The woman on the phone said I’d have to talk to another department who could take payment over the phone and close the account. She transfers me to that department. They say I have to speak with someone in Maryland or somewhere, they transfer me. I reach the department, they say my account is closed and I have to talk to another department, they transfer me. I reach that department and they say my account isn’t closed but either way they can’t take payment over the phone. The complete incompetence they possess is just astounding. I’m going back to using my Capital One 360 account since I’ve never been charged returned check fees, fees for being overdrawn, fees for depositing my checks via their app (US Bank charges .50¢ for each one, Capital One 360 is free). There are many more fees US Bank imposes that Capital One doesn’t have. I can’t believe US Bank is actually still in business with their “screw our customers” mentality and policies.
