  • I was never credited. I received an email from you through this website on 10/31/12 asking for more info so that it could be resolved. I don't know the number of the payphone I used but it was located at the Tillamook Forest Center, 45500 Wilson River Hwy., Tillamook, OR 97141. I have a printout from my bank account showing the charge but can't attach it to this post.

  • Fine don't post all the possible rates. But you can post the per minute charge for using a credit card for a local call. You post the per minute charge for using coins for a local call. Just used one of your phones for a 30 second local call while at the mall to locate my wife cause she had my cell phone. 30 seconds, and the charge was $20.20. I figured since it was $1 a minute for the call using coins, maybe it might be $2-3 for a credit card call. Definately a scam. They say you can call and get a quote, instead of listing the price to cover their butts, and they know that 99% of the people will be like me and not get the price figuring that they could not legally charge such a fee.

If all of your costs add an additional $19.20 for a single call, how come I can buy something at McDonalds for $5 and use a credit card and they are some how able to make a profit off of that and don't need an additional $20 to process the transaction.

  • WiMacTel is an operator services provider. Consumers are able to contact us for any issues by calling Customer Service at 888-476-0881, or e-mailing us at [email protected]; this information is posted on our website www.wimactel.com.

Most consumers do not understand and appreciate the expense differences between a direct-dialed call and an operator assisted call; operator assisted calls are more expensive due to the numerous expenses associated with them, such as:

    Validation
    Billing & Collection
    Bad debt
Live operator staffing (amortized over all calls)
Credit card processing fees and compliance requirements
    Customer service center

None of these expenses are associated with coin-paid direct-dial calls placed from a pay telephone or direct-dialed calls placed from a residence or business.

WiMacTel does not post our calling rates on pay telephones due to space limitations. With calls to locations worldwide; automated versus live operator processing; and, various billing methods, there is no room to display all of the resulting rates. To help consumers make an informed decision, WiMacTel does make available the option to obtain a rate quote.

It is WiMacTel’s desire to make certain that every consumer who uses our service is satisfied. You indicated that you were offered a 35% refund which would indicate you have talked with WiMacTel's Customer Service. We are always responsive to consumer inquiries and strive to address and resolve any consumer concerns, so I highly recommend you contact our Customer Service Center again and express your ongoing concern.

    Thank you!

  • WiMacTel does not bill for calls that are not answered. There is a pre-authorization charge that is applied when the credit card is validated; this is to be sure that the card is billable at least up to the pre-authoriztion dollar amount. All pre-authorization charges are automatically reversed and credited back to the credit/debit card account; depending on the issuing bank, it can take anywhere from two to five business days for the credit to appear back on the card account. Again, if the call was never connected, there will be no charge from WiMacTel. Since you did your post on 8/19, you should have the pre-authorization credit back by now and a zero amount due to WiMacTel; if this is not the case, please contact our Customer Service group at 888-476-0881 so that we can help rectify the issue.

  • WiMacTel does not bill for calls that are not answered. The fact that you say you were charged $13.77 for an attempt indicates to me that you utilized a credit card to pay for the call. In the validation process to determine if a credit card is billable, a pre-authorization charge is applied to make certain the card can be billed at least up to the dollar amount of the pre-authoization charge. All pre-authoization charges are automatically reversed; depending on the card issuing bank, it can take anywhere from one to five days for the pre-authorization credit to appear on the card account. As far as the other charges, it is true that operator services calls (calling card, credit card, collect and billed to third number) are higher than direct-dialed calls (1+area code+number) due to the numerous costs a carrier incurs in processing these type of calls. To help all consumers in making an informed decision when placing their calls, WiMacTel does offer the option for a rate quote (this is option 3 in the automated voice response system). Some consumers either do not hear the option or choose to ignore it and move forward in processing their call. It is always WiMacTel's goal to make certain that consumers are satisfied with our service; whenever any concern arises, the hope is that a consumer will contact WiMacTel customer service at 888-476-0881 or by e-mail at [email protected]. If you are willing to contact WiMacTel customer service, we will attempt to resolve any concern you may have.

  • I am hopeful that I can clear up some misconceptions that you seem to have. Your thought that a collect call should be in the $2.00 to $3.00 range would make the largest U.S. phone companies, AT&T and Verizon, just as predatory as you accuse WiMacTel of being, as these companies charge significantly higher charges than that. You state that your call was placed with no operator assistance; what I believe you are referring to is no assistance from a live operator. Credit card calls and collect calls processed on an automated basis are still considered operator assisted calls by the industry. As far as bad debt, you have made a determination as to what this rate should be; unfortunately, for the operator services industry, your figure is dramatically understated from the reality of what it actually is. You insinuate that WiMacTel has an ulterior motive for not posting its rates, when in reality there is simply no physical way to post all the rates in the amount of space available on a pay telephone. The FCC recognizes this and has a regulation that requires all operator service providers to offer a rate quote option; WiMacTel complies fully with this requirement. It is unfortunate that you have a negative perception of a Company based on unfounded beliefs. WiMacTel complies fully with all Federal and State regulations and strives to respond to any consumer issue if just given the opportunity.

  • It is my hope that I can clarify some things for you that may be of help. You feel that although you agree there is not enough room to post all of the potential operator assisted rates on the pay telephone, potential callers should be alerted that if they use their credit card they will expose themselves to higher charges. WiMacTel actually does more to help consumers understand the charges than you have suggested; we offer a rate quote option on every call. This allows any consumer to determine the exact cost prior to placing a call should they choose to do so. Based on the number of calls WiMacTel processes, we have a very small percentage of consumer inquiries; based on this, it would appear that most consumers do not agree with your subjective assessment that the charges are excessive. WiMacTel strives to respond to any consumer issue if just given the opportunity to do so.

  • I am hopeful that I can provide you with some information that will help clarify things. Unfortunately, when you take the total charge for a call and divide it by the number of minutes to come up with a cost per minute, you are not seeing the true per minute cost. The reason for this is that there are numerous expenses that all operator services providers incur in provisioning the service. The initial minute of a call includes fixed charges that recover much of this expense; each subsequent minute of a call incurs only a small per minute fee. For longer duration calls, the initial fixed charges are amortized over more minutes thereby reducing the overall cost per minute. On a short call, like the one you placed, the call might appear to cost approximately $10.00 per minute; however, on a longer duration call, this per minute rate would be considerably lower. There is no intention whatsoever to be greedy or take advantage of any traveler; our goal is simply to recover our costs, like all operator services providers do, and make a reasonable rate of return. WiMacTel always strives to respond to any consumer concerns, if just given the opportunity to do so.

  • That's your response to ripping me off? One of my charges, for $13.77, is for a mere attempt. The person I was calling didn't even pick up the phone and yet, I was charged for it. A 4 minute call and you charge me $25.59 and a 3 minute call costs me $23.18. Not to mention the extra 'fee' you tack on. I'm outraged and will continue to fight these charges until resolved. I can't even believe you're still in business.

  • I did receive a partial refund as I mentioned, but this attempt to disguise your predatory practices as acceptable is unconscionable. Operators have been connecting calls since the beginning of phone service. If anything, automation has greatly reduced your costs and can in no way account for the massive overpricing of your service that costs your business only pennies. $2 or $3 to make a collect call, sure. $20 or $30 NO WAY!
The operator assistance was only required after we were discovered the amount you charged. The call itself was made with no operator assistance. The option to request a quote is purposefully left to the end of the selections offered, knowing most users will never get that deep in the selections list before choosing the number of their option. This avoids people even knowing they had an option to get a quote.
Credit card and bad debt costs are costs of doing business and unless your running a real shady operation, this should be costing you less than 3 or 4% of your revenues. Your excuses for not posting rates ring empty as a poor cover for your true intention to sneak a charge past an unsuspecting customer.
Your attempt here to legitimize your deceptive practices is further evidence that you are aware that you are purposefully attempting to dupe customers and think you can justify your actions. You should acknowledge your guilt.
